Traditional crowns, bridges, and veneers must be fabricated in a dental lab. This process can take upwards of two weeks. Today, CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology can be used to craft your restorations in a single office visit while you wait. CEREC® – a leading CAD/CAM system used in dentistry – allows our doctors at Navid Family Dental in Peabody, MA, to produce custom restorations in a fraction of the time that traditional methods require. This technology saves our patients time and money.
The CEREC Advantage
CEREC uses digital impressions and computer-guided tools to create custom restorations quickly and efficiently.
How CEREC Works
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Using a handheld wand, digital impressions are taken of your teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. These images are then uploaded to our computer, where your doctor will design a virtual model of your restoration, making any necessary adjustments. Once complete, the digital files will be sent to our in-office milling machine, which will fabricate your new restoration.
CEREC technology is incredibly accurate, providing our patients with comfortable, lifelike restorations that fit precisely and look great.
After assessing the fit of your restoration, your dentist will bond it into place and make any necessary adjustments. The result is an instantly beautiful, natural-looking smile.
Our CEREC system is versatile and can be used to create a number of custom restorations:
- Crowns: Used in both restorative and cosmetic procedures, dental crowns can repair and reinforce decayed, fractured, misshapen, or discolored teeth. This type of restoration is designed to fit over the entire tooth structure, providing strength and stability. Crowns can also be used to replace single missing teeth in conjunction with dental implants.
- Bridges: A common treatment for missing teeth, a dental bridge consists of two dental crowns with prosthetic teeth in between. The crowns can be supported either by natural teeth or dental implants, and the artificial teeth fill the gap in your smile.
- Veneers: Veneers can conceal a wide range of minor aesthetic imperfections, such as chips, cracks, discoloration, misshapen teeth, and more. Unlike crowns, which cover the entire tooth structure, veneers cover only the front surfaces of the teeth.
- Inlays and onlays: Sometimes, dental damage is too extensive for a simple filling, but not significant enough for a crown. In these instances, custom inlays or onlays can be used to restore teeth. These restorations are custom-made to fit like puzzle pieces into the chewing surfaces of teeth.
Benefits of CEREC Technology
CEREC technology provides a number of advantages to our patients. Traditionally, temporary restorations must be worn during the interim period while the lab fabricates your final restoration. This is not necessary with same-day restorations. By eliminating lab fees and the cost of a temporary restoration, patients can not only enjoy faster treatment, but lower costs as well.
In addition, CEREC technology is incredibly accurate, providing our patients with comfortable, lifelike restorations that fit precisely and look great. Crafted from a solid block of ceramic, your restoration can be custom-shaded to match your surrounding teeth.
