Many patients avoid the dentist for months or even years due to anxiety over dental appointments. Sedation dentistry offers an opportunity for you to receive the treatments you need without fear or stress. Using safe, effective medications, sedation dentistry can help you relax throughout your visit. At Navid Family Dentistry & Associates in Peabody, MA, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Our skilled and compassionate team of dentists can help choose the right sedation option so you can receive the care you want and need.
Who Can Benefit from Sedation?
There are many reasons your dentist may recommend sedation for a certain procedure. Most often, our team suggests sedation dentistry for patients with intense fear and anxiety surrounding visits to the dentist. However, sedation is also appropriate for individuals who:
- Have difficulty sitting still
- Require complex treatment
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
- Struggle with severe dental sensitivity
- Have a low pain threshold
There are certain medical conditions which can impact your ability to safely receive sedation. Be sure to discuss your full medical history with your dentist before your procedure to ensure sedation is right for you.
Your Sedation Options
At Navid Family Dental & Associates, we offer two forms of sedation. Which type of sedation we recommend will depend on your procedure, as well as your preferences and medical history. Our team believes in the importance of informed decisions, so we will fully explain your options to you before proceeding with a treatment plan.

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a clear, almost odorless gas which is inhaled to produce feelings of calm and tranquility. Before your procedure, your dentist will place a small mask over your nose. This mask allows your dentist to carefully control the level of sedation. Since the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, many patients drive themselves home after their procedure.
If you choose oral conscious sedation, we will provide you with a prescription medication in the form of a pill. Typically, we recommend you take this pill about half an hour before your treatment. However, for individuals with extreme dental anxiety, we may have them begin the medication as early as the day before. The effects of oral sedatives last longer than nitrous oxide, so you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
The Advantages of Choosing Sedation
Sedation dentistry helps many individuals who would otherwise avoid the dentist receive the treatment they need. Under the effects of sedation, dental procedures feel shorter and produce less anxiety and discomfort. In addition, our team can often perform procedures more quickly, allowing us to treat more complicated cases in fewer appointments.
